Mute was een project in de openbare ruimte in Haarlem, te zien na zonsondergang. Gedurende mijn werkperiode bij kunstenaars initiatief Nieuwe Vide in Haarlem ben ik hiervoor initiatiefnemer en curator geweest.

Van april 2004 t/m januari 2005 is er elke avond maandelijks een nieuwe projectie te zien geweest.

Mijn maand ‘gespot’ is het eindresultaat van een (wekenlange) speurtocht door de openbare ruimte van Haarlem: op zoek naar al dan niet anonieme persoonlijke boodschappen. Variërend van graffiti, stickers, posters – of combinaties van deze uitingsvormen. Voor één keer zijn de meestal kleine onopvallende werkjes nu prominent te zien geweest: de declamerende (met een tekstbord in zijn hand) tuinkabouter op de grijze elektriciteitskastjes, de met lakverf in een sjabloon gespoten oproep ‘WEES MOOI’, steeds terugkerende krijttekeningen rond de stadsschouwburg, in karakteristieke met pen geschreven teksten op lantaarnpalen. Namen, oproepen, waarschuwingen op allerhande straat meubilair: een medium voor Haarlemmers die iets aan hun omgeving willen vertellen zijn nu tijdelijk verplaatst, uitgelicht en uitvergroot te zien.

Every evening, from april 2004 until january 2005 there was a different projection every new month.

I contributed to this project with ‘gespot’ (‘seen’), a result of a search of Haarlem’s public space, for (non-)personal messages. This varied from graffitti, stencil-work, stickers, posters, drawings, or a combination of them. For once the tiniest works were shown blown-up: the declaming garden-gnome (with a textboard held up high) on the grey electricity houses, the stencilled notice: BE PRETTY (WEES MOOI), re-appearing chalk drawings made around Haarlems theatre, characteristicly pen-written texts on lampposts. Names, notices, warnings on all kinds of street furniture: a medium for Haarlems citizens wanting to inform there surrounding were blown up for one month.
